  • Nov 18, 2013   Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh on Innovate or Stagnate: The Role of Leadership in Transforming Businesses

SACCJ Board and Corporate Members and Counsellor Ms Gloria Ncwana, South African Embassy, joined  a special Joint Chamber event hosted by the ANZCCJ with Sam Walsh AO, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto at the Australian Embassy.

Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh, who was in Japan on a week-long visit to meet key stakeholders, delivered the keynote address on the role innovation plays in transforming businesses, emphasising the value of long-standing relationships with Japanese partners, to the international business community in Tokyo, with audience members drawn from the Australia-New Zealand, American, British, Canadian and South African Chambers of Commerce.

Earlier in the day, Mr Walsh had met with the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. In today’s keynote speech, Mr Walsh said: “I know innovation is very high on Prime Minister Abe’s agenda. We spoke about a vision we both share, where innovation is seen as a key platform for economic success.

“We’re using our long-established history of innovation to transform the business, and the mining industry more broadly. And our Japanese partnerships are absolutely critical to doing just that.

“While we believe the demand for key commodities will double over the next 15 to 20 years, the challenges of the business of mining are increasing, such as environmental, social and economic issues and the increasingly difficulty of finding and mining resource deposits.

“We are using innovation to make mining more efficient, reliable and sustainable, while reducing health, safety and performance issues. In a business sense, it means innovate or stagnate: standing still really isn’t an option.”

Rio Tinto has a longstanding relationship with Japan, dating back to the 1960s when Japanese steel mills underwrote the development of Rio Tinto’s first iron ore mines in Western Australia.  Today Japan is Rio Tinto’s second-largest market, generating 16 per cent of global revenue. Rio Tinto also partners with a number of Japanese companies in its joint venture operations around the world, and sources a significant amount of its global mining machinery and equipment from Japanese companies.

Japanese technology makes a critical contribution to Rio Tinto’s world-leading innovation in mining technology ; for example, the driverless trucks in Rio Tinto’s Mine of the Future™ were underlined in the speech.
